Kids Wetsuit FAQ

Whether you're buying your child's first wetsuit or upgrading from one that didn't cut it, here are the questions we hear most from Le Grom parents.

Sizing and fit

What size wetsuit does my toddler need?

Use weight and height together, not age. Our sizes run 2T (15 to 25 lbs, 27 to 35 in), 3T (25 to 35 lbs, 35 to 40 in), 4T (30 to 40 lbs, 40 to 45 in), and 6T (40 to 50 lbs, 45 to 49 in). When in doubt, size up. View the full size guide.

My child is between sizes. Should I size up or down?

Always size up. Neoprene has natural stretch, so a slightly roomier fit is more comfortable and much easier to get on. A too-tight suit restricts movement and creates a miserable experience.

How should a wetsuit fit a toddler?

Snug but not restrictive. You should be able to pinch a small amount of neoprene at the shoulder. The neck should be comfortable, not choking, and the crotch seam should sit in the right place. Arms and legs should reach the wrists and ankles. If they stop mid-forearm or mid-shin, size up.

Do your wetsuits fit over swim diapers?

Yes. Our toddler sizing accounts for swim diapers. The 2T and 3T sizes have a bit of extra room in the seat area.

The neoprene

Is 3mm thick enough?

For most families, yes. 3mm is the sweet spot, warm enough for typical ocean conditions without being so thick that it restricts movement. If your kid is regularly in colder water year-round, consider layering a rash guard underneath.

How does The Grom Fullsuit compare to budget wetsuits?

Most budget toddler wetsuits use thinner neoprene with overlocked seams that scratch sensitive skin. The Grom Fullsuit uses 3mm neoprene with flatlock seams and patterns built around toddler proportions, so it actually fits the way a wetsuit should.

Getting it on (the hard part)

How do I put a wetsuit on a toddler?

The back zipper makes it easier than front-zip or pull-on suits. Lay the suit flat and open, slide legs in first, then arms, then zip up from the bottom. The long pull tab makes zipping fast. Most parents get the whole process down to under two minutes after a couple of tries.

Any tips for making it easier?

Wet the inside of the suit slightly before putting it on. It slides on much more easily over dry skin. Some parents apply a thin layer of baby powder inside the suit before heading to the beach. The most important tip: stay calm. If you're relaxed, your toddler will be too.

Care and longevity

How do I wash a kids wetsuit?

Rinse with fresh water after every use. For a deeper clean, soak in cool water with a small amount of wetsuit shampoo (baby shampoo works too). Never use hot water, and never put it in a washing machine or dryer.

How should I store the wetsuit?

Hang it on a wide hanger or drape it over a railing in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, and never fold it tightly. Tight folds create permanent creases in the neoprene. Once fully dry, store in a cool, dry place.

How long will a Le Grom wetsuit last?

With proper care, a season of regular use. Many families get two seasons before their child outgrows it. The quality neoprene and flatlock construction are designed to hold up to real kid use β€” sand, rocks, crawling, and the rest.
