Toddler Wetsuit Size Guide: How to Find the Perfect Fit (2T–6T)
Finding the Right Wetsuit Size for Your Toddler
Getting the right wetsuit size for your toddler is the difference between a happy kid who loves the water and a miserable one who wants out after five minutes. Too tight and they can't move. Too loose and cold water flushes through every time they splash. This guide covers everything you need to know about sizing toddler wetsuits from 2T to 6T.

How to Measure Your Toddler for a Wetsuit
You only need two measurements to get the right size: height and chest circumference.
Height: Stand your toddler against a wall without shoes. Mark the top of their head and measure from the floor.
Chest: Wrap a soft measuring tape around the widest part of their chest, under the armpits. Keep it snug but not tight. You should be able to fit one finger underneath.
If your toddler falls between two sizes, size up. A slightly roomy wetsuit is better than one that's too tight. They'll grow into it, and neoprene that's too snug restricts movement and makes it harder to get on and off.
What Size Wetsuit for a 2 Year Old?
Most 2-year-olds wear a 2T wetsuit. This fits toddlers 33 to 36 inches tall and 26 to 30 pounds. If your child is tall for their age or closer to 2.5 years old, try the 3T, especially if they'll be wearing it through the summer.
What Size Wetsuit for a 3 Year Old?
A 3-year-old typically wears a 3T wetsuit, fitting kids 36 to 39 inches tall and 30 to 34 pounds. The 3T is our most popular size. It hits the sweet spot where toddlers are old enough to really play in the water but still need full-body coverage and warmth.
What Size Wetsuit for a 4 Year Old?
Most 4-year-olds fit a 4T wetsuit (39 to 42 inches, 34 to 38 pounds). At this age, kids are more active in the water: boogie boarding, swimming lessons, tide pool exploring. So proper fit matters even more for mobility.
What Size Wetsuit for a 5 Year Old?
A 5-year-old typically fits a 6T wetsuit. The Grom Fullsuit jumps from 4T straight to 6T, which comfortably covers the 5-year-old range (42 to 48 inches, 38 to 48 pounds). If your child is on the smaller side for their age, the 4T may still work. Measure height and chest to decide.
How Should a Toddler Wetsuit Fit?
A properly fitting toddler wetsuit should be:
- Snug but not tight. The neoprene should lay flat against the skin without gaps, but your toddler should be able to raise their arms overhead and squat down comfortably.
- No bunching at joints. Check the knees, elbows, and armpits. Excess material here means the suit is too big and water will flush through.
- Flush at the neck and wrists. These are the main entry points for cold water. The suit should seal gently without choking or leaving red marks.
- Easy to get on. A back-zip design like The Grom Fullsuit makes it dramatically easier to wrestle a squirming toddler into neoprene.
2mm vs 3mm: Which Thickness for Toddlers?
For most families, a 3mm wetsuit is the right choice for toddlers. Here's why:
- 2mm neoprene is lighter, but it gives up real warmth. Toddlers get cold faster than adults do, and a thinner suit can cut a beach day short.
- 3mm neoprene keeps them warmer without giving up movement, especially with modern stretch neoprene. It covers the typical ocean, lake, and beach days where families actually take toddlers.
The Grom Fullsuit uses 3mm neoprene with flatlock seams and an easy back zipper, giving your toddler warmth, coverage, and full mobility in the water.
Ready to Find Your Toddler's Size?
Use the size chart above, grab a measuring tape, and you'll have the right fit in under a minute. If you're between sizes, go up. Toddlers grow fast, and a slightly roomy wetsuit works better than a tight one.
