Youth Wetsuit Sizing Guide: 8Y to 12Y Fit Tips for Older Kids

If your kid is 6 to 10 years old and you've been searching for a wetsuit that actually fits them, you've probably hit the same wall every parent does. Toddler suits are too small. Adult or junior suits are way too long in the torso and arms. Most "kids" wetsuits in this size range are scaled-down adult patterns that fit nobody well.

Here's how to size a youth wetsuit (sizes 8Y, 10Y, and 12Y) so your kid actually wears it.

Start with weight, not age

Age is a rough proxy. Two 9-year-olds can be 25 pounds apart. Wetsuits work by trapping a thin layer of water against the body and warming it, so a loose fit means cold water flushes through and the suit is useless.

For our Youth Fullsuit (8Y, 10Y, 12Y), here's what we've found fits best in real ocean conditions:

  • 8Y: kids 50 to 70 lbs, roughly 47 to 51 inches tall
  • 10Y: kids 65 to 85 lbs, roughly 51 to 55 inches tall
  • 12Y: kids 80 to 105 lbs, roughly 55 to 59 inches tall

If your kid is between sizes, size up. They'll grow into it within a few months and a slightly loose suit beats one they can't move in.

Three fit checks before the first surf session

Once the suit is on, run through these:

  1. Crouch test. Have them squat down. The suit should not pull tight at the chest or pinch at the back of the knee. If the back zipper rides up significantly, the torso is too long.
  2. Arm raise test. Have them reach both arms straight up. The suit should not yank up over their hips. If it does, the torso is too short and they'll be uncomfortable paddling.
  3. Wrist and ankle test. Cuffs should sit snug at wrist and ankle without choking. If you can fit two fingers easily under the cuff, water will flush in.

What to look for in a youth wetsuit (beyond size)

  • 3mm neoprene: built for most U.S. coast conditions, flexible enough that they can paddle without fatigue.
  • Back zipper with extended pull tab: most kids 8 to 10 still need help getting the zipper started, but they should be able to finish it themselves. An extended tab makes that possible.
  • Flatlock seams: sit flat against the skin and won't chafe on long sessions.

How long will a youth wetsuit fit?

Honest answer: about a season, sometimes two. Kids 6 to 10 are growing fast. Plan to size up annually unless you got it on the larger end of the range.

The bottom line

Get the size right by weight, not age. Run the three fit tests before they hit the water. Your kid surfs longer, plays harder, and stays in the water happier when the suit actually fits.
