Toddler Wetsuit Sizing Guide: What Size for a 2, 3, or 4 Year Old

The complete guide to getting the right fit

Buying a wetsuit for a toddler online can feel like a gamble. Kids grow fast, every brand sizes differently, and a wetsuit that's too tight is basically unwearable. Age-based sizing doesn't work for toddlers.

A 3-year-old can weigh anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds and range from 35 to 42 inches tall. That's a huge variation, and it's why you need to measure your child before ordering.

How to measure your toddler for a wetsuit

You need two measurements: weight and height. Here's how to get accurate numbers.

Measuring height

  1. Have your toddler stand barefoot against a wall
  2. Make sure their heels, back, and head touch the wall
  3. Place a book flat on top of their head
  4. Mark where the bottom of the book meets the wall
  5. Measure from the floor to the mark

Measuring weight

Use a standard bathroom scale. For squirmy toddlers, weigh yourself first, then weigh yourself holding them, and subtract the difference.

Le Grom toddler wetsuit size chart

The Grom Fullsuit is sized by weight and height, not age. Use this chart to find the right fit:

Size Weight Height Typical age
2T 15 to 25 lbs 27 to 35 in 1 to 2 years
3T 25 to 35 lbs 35 to 40 in 2 to 3 years
4T 30 to 40 lbs 40 to 45 in 3 to 4 years
6T 40 to 50 lbs 45 to 49 in 5 to 6 years

Age ranges are approximate. Always use weight and height as your primary guide.

What if my toddler is between sizes?

This is the most common question parents ask. The rule: when in doubt, size up.

A slightly loose wetsuit still provides warmth and protection. A too-tight wetsuit is uncomfortable, restricts movement, and can be nearly impossible to get on a squirmy toddler.

When to size up

  • Your child's measurements fall between two sizes
  • They're at the upper end of a size range
  • You want the wetsuit to last more than one season
  • Your child is tall and lean (prioritize height over weight)

When to stick with the smaller size

  • Your child is at the lower end of a size range
  • They're shorter and stockier (prioritize weight over height)
  • You need the wetsuit for immediate use and fit is critical

How should a toddler wetsuit fit?

A properly fitted wetsuit should feel snug but not restrictive. What to check:

Good fit signs

  • Snug but comfortable. The wetsuit should hug their body without pinching or creating red marks.
  • Full range of motion. They can raise their arms, squat, and move freely.
  • No big gaps. Minimal space at the neck, wrists, and ankles. Small gaps are okay.
  • Flat seams. No bunching or twisting of the material.
  • Proper length. Ankles and wrists end at the right spots, not riding up or too long.

Signs it's too small

  • Difficult to zip up
  • Red marks or indentations on skin after wearing
  • Restricted movement, can't raise arms fully
  • Ankles or wrists ride up significantly
  • Your toddler complains it's uncomfortable

Signs it's too big

  • Large gaps at neck, wrists, or ankles (more than an inch)
  • Excess material bunching at joints
  • Wetsuit sags or droops when dry
  • Water pools inside the suit excessively

Common sizing mistakes parents make

Ordering based on age alone

A 3-year-old could need anywhere from a 2T to a 4T depending on their build. Always measure.

Ordering too small "because they'll grow into it"

This doesn't work with wetsuits. If it's too small now, it won't function properly and your toddler won't want to wear it.

Comparing to clothing sizes

Wetsuit sizing is different from regular clothing. A toddler who wears 3T clothes might need a 4T wetsuit.

Not accounting for swim diapers

If your toddler will wear a swim diaper under the wetsuit, factor in that extra bulk when choosing a size.

How long will a toddler wetsuit last?

Most toddlers can wear the same wetsuit for one to two seasons if you size up slightly. Growth spurts vary, but here's what to expect:

  • Ages 1 to 2: Fastest growth period. Expect one season per size.
  • Ages 3 to 4: Moderate growth. May get one to two seasons.
  • Ages 5 to 6: Slower growth. Often get two seasons.

What if it doesn't fit?

Le Grom offers free returns and exchanges within 30 days. If the wetsuit doesn't fit right, send it back, no hassle, no restocking fees.

Quick sizing cheat sheet

For a 2-year-old: Most will fit 2T or 3T. Measure to confirm.
For a 3-year-old: Most will fit 3T.
For a 4-year-old: Most will fit 4T.
For a 5-year-old: Most will fit 6T (we don't currently offer 5T).
For a 6-year-old: Most will fit 6T or may need youth sizing.

Still not sure?

When in doubt, size up. A wetsuit that's slightly big will still keep your toddler warm and comfortable. A wetsuit that's too small won't get worn.
